10 Essentials: Ernest Alexander

Ernest Alexander Sabine started his line, Ernest Alexander, in 2009 with one goal in mind: the perfect men’s bag. And if you ask us, he nailed it. From rich leather messengers to tidy wax twill satchels, every piece is thoughtful and clean to a T. Thankfully, he has since expanded his collections to include equally immaculate and inspired menswear.

“Everything has a slightly preppy aesthetic, but with an edge,” Ernest says of his designs. That is, they may be inspired by his trips to Cape Cod as a kid, but they’re crafted and styled for life in the city. And it’s that winning combination that has earned him a spot as one of GQ’s Best New Menswear Designers this year. We met with Ernest at his apartment in Manhattan to hear more about his essentials, from rare whiskies to Swiss combs and the best chocolate chip cookies in New York City.

#GQForGap Editors’ Picks: Ian Velardi
“The button-sleeve polo shirt is a staple in Italian menswear shops and now, thanks to Ian Velardi, is available at your local Gap. It’s the versatility for the price—$45—that really sells this shirt for me.”

#GQForGap Editors’ Picks: Todd Snyder
“There’s always an undercurrent of military influence in Todd Snyder’s collections, and what’s so great about this parka is that it takes a basic item but amps it up in the color of the season, safety orange. It’s the ideal transitional jacket because of the removable lining, plus it’ll keep you dry in inclement weather. The fit is what sells it though, slim enough to wear over a just a henley but with enough room for a sweater or sports jacket. And obviously, the price—$178—is right.”

#GQForGap Editors’ Picks: Ovadia & Sons
“Stylish wool cargo pants should be on every guy’s must-have list this fall. I love this Ovadia & Sons pair for being lofty and luxe, but extremely affordable. Plus, the cut is impressively slim, so I won’t have to spend a fortune on having them tailored. The cargos are appropriate for any fall Friday at work and will take you straight through the weekend—perfectly paired with an essential tweed sports jacket, chunky fair isle sweater, or a brightly colored parka (check out Mr. Snyder’s). Get them and pull them on as soon as you can.”

#GQForGap Editors’ Picks: BLK DNM
“One of the highlights for me from Johan Lindeberg’s BLK DNM line is the amazing leather bomber jackets he consistently turns out each season. What’s even more impressive is that Johan has literally taken that luxe piece and translated it, almost exactly, for this Best New Menswear Designers in America collaboration. It’s a piece that’s not only on trend for the season, but incredibly versatile thanks to the removable mouton collar, and really a steal at $348. You can dress it up, with a shirt and tie, or down, with the best beat-up tee you own—but either way, you’re going to be wearing this until it falls apart.”
